The first-ever South Africa-based company to offer sildenafil citrate as its first prescription drug is set to launch its first generic version of Viagra in South Africa on Friday.
The company, which launched its first generic version of Viagra in the country in late December, said it will offer sildenafil citrate as a first-line option to its first-of-a-type generic rival.
The drug, which has been available in the South African market since 1998, is the first drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and is available as a prescription drug in most other markets.

The company has already developed a brand-name product called Kamagra, which was first approved for sale in the country in December 2010 and which has been available in more than 1,000 pharmacies.
“We have very strong partnerships with South Africa’s largest companies,” said Dr. Andrew White, president of South Africa’s medical affairs company.
“We are excited to work with South African’s leading manufacturers to launch the generic version of Viagra. This will allow our own generic manufacturers to sell this product in the market and allow us to bring the product to the market as quickly as possible.”
White said that he has also taken the opportunity to develop a brand-name product called Kamagra, which is also the branded version of Viagra, which is sold in South Africa in the US and Europe.
